Open Positions & Volunteer Opportunities
Participating in local government is a rewarding experience and it is vital to sustaining our community. Volunteers from all backgrounds, identities, and experiences are encouraged to apply and join our incredible team. Anyone interested in being appointed to a municipal board or committee should submit an application to the Selectboard Administrator. Once an application is submitted, the Administrator will confirm it has been received and let the applicant know what to expect next in the appointment process.

Current Openings:
| Conservation Commission (4-year term and 2-year completion term) |
Advisory board established to inventory the natural resources of a community, combat invasive species, and organize and administer municipal lands for the purpose of conservation. |
| Curtis Pond Dam Monitor (1-year term) |
Responsible for regularly monitoring the condition of and/or notable changes to the Curtis Pond Dam, such as sink holes around the spillway, stones pushing out more than normal, and water levels over topping the spillway. |
| Curtis Pond Harbor Master (1-year term) |
Responsible for installing the dock at Curtis pond and managing and monitoring the Curtis Pond Harbor. |
| Curtis Pond Island Oversight (1-year term) |
Members steward Curtis Pond Island, including the lean-to area and the swimming access. Following the Town's “Curtis Pond Island Ordinance” when the Town Clerk has issued a permit for day use or camping, they will notify overseers who will in turn enforce the rules and regulations of the Ordinance, the purpose of which is to ensure the public's use and enjoyment of the Island. |
| Design Advisory Board (4-year term) |
Responsible for advising the town's Development Review Board on matters regarding design and site planning on proposed development projects within the Town's Historic Districts. Working in accordance with Vermont's Certified Local Government Program (CLG), this group reviews proposals for projects within Historic Districts. |
| Development Review Board (2, 3-year term positions open) (2, 3-year term alternate positions open) |
A quasi-judicial board granted with the authority to approve, condition, or reject zoning and other land use applications. Appointed members serve three year terms. The DRB meets on the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 6:00 pm, and as needed. Alternate board members serve on call as needed. |
| Development Review Board, Clerk (3-year term) |
Responsible for attending DRB meetings and hearings, composing and posting meeting warnings, and recording meeting minutes. |
| E-911 Coordinator (1-year term) |
Responsible for ensuring that physical addresses are mapped correctly for rapid emergency response, and for coordinating address assignments based on distance from road intersections. Also works to ensure property owners post 3-inch, visible address numbers within 30 days of notification. |
| Emergency Management Committee (2, 3-year term positions open) |
Members are responsible for preparing for, responding to, and recovering from threatened or actual natural disasters, acts of terrorism, or other community-scale tragedies or accidents. The EMC meets on the 3rd Thursday of every month at 7:00 pm, and as needed. |
| Emergency Management Director (3-year term) |
Responsible for the organization, administration, and operation of the local committee that is formed for emergency management in the town or city. The emergency management chairperson is under the direct control of the selectboard but may coordinate his or her emergency management efforts with neighboring towns and cities, and with the state emergency management division and the federal government. |
| Forest Fire Warden (2, 5-year term positions open, for a warden and a warden's deputy) |
Responsible for preventing forest fires in the town by enforcing laws and proclamations designed to prevent forest fires, by patrolling areas that are particularly vulnerable to fire during the seasons in which such fires are most apt to occur, and by issuing permits for open burning within the town. The fire warden, in conjunction with the local fire department, is also responsible for acting quickly to bring forest fires under control. |
| Gospel Hollow Warden (1-year term) |
Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the Town Office and the Town Hall, on call for general repairs and maintenance. |
| Green Up Co-Coordinator (1-year term) |
Responsible for distributing posters and bags (provided by Green Up Vermont) throughout the Town, recruiting volunteer teams, identifying areas to clean up, arranging transportation of litter, and tracking and reporting basic statistics. |
| Historic Preservation Commission (4, 3-year term positions open) |
Responsible for historical preservation through public policy to develop and oversee the functions of the local preservation program. The Town’s current project is to develop driving/biking tours that highlight the history of the five historic districts in Calais. The Historic Preservation Commission meets on the 2nd Wednesday of every month at 7:00 pm, and as needed. |
| Justice of the Peace (2-year term) |
The duties of justices of the peace can fall into five categories of responsibilities: Managing and assisting during elections, tax abatement and appeals, marriages, oaths and notary services, and magistrate duties as assigned by the Supreme Court. |
| Planning Commission (4-year term) |
Member duties include preparing a municipal plan; making recommendations on matters of land development, conservation, and preservation; and participating in a regional planning program. Members should have a good working knowledge of all aspects of the town and be able to listen to many sides of an issue. |
| Planning Commission Secretary (4-year term) |
Responsible for attending Planning Commission meetings and hearings, composing and posting meeting warnings, and recording meeting minutes. |
| Swim Program (2-year term) |
Members coordinate, manage, and oversee the Swim Program at Curtis Pond each summer. Responsibilities include: promoting the program; setting a program schedule; managing registrations; collecting fees and turning them over to the Town Office; hiring and supervising Swim Instructors; setting up and managing porta potties and trash removal; maintenance, repair and installation of the dock and floating dock; and monitoring the water quality of the Pond. |
| Town Meeting Moderator (1-year term) |
Serving as the referees of Vermont's annual Town Meetings, the moderator guides and molds the meeting from opening gavel to adjournment with an authority that is second to no one, not even the Selectboard, during the time the meeting is in session. They do not take positions or sides, and they seldom vote, but they conduct each meeting with absolute decorum following Robert's Rules of Order. |
| Trails Committee (2, 3-year term positions open) |
Responsible for maintaining the system of more than 14 miles of public trails for non-motorized recreation. Members will walk trails, remove or report hazards, investigate trail grounds, and communicate |
| Tree Warden (2, 1-year term positions open, for warden and assistant warden) |
Plans and implements a shade tree preservation program for the purpose of shading and beautifying public places. Removes diseased, dying, or dead trees, which create a hazard to public safety or threaten the effectiveness of disease or insect control programs. |
