Select Board Seeking Applicants for New Ordinance Advisory Committee
The Calais Selectboard would like to create a new volunteer “Ordinance Advisory Committee” to review and recommend changes to current Town ordinances. This advisory committee would start by reviewing current Calais laws so that they more accurately reflect the direction the town wishes to go.
If you are interested in serving on this new Calais Ordinance Advisory Committee, please let us know.
About the Committee
Service on this new Committee will allow Calais citizens an opportunity to participate in the review and development of specific recommendations that will go before the Selectboard.
The proposed new Ordinance Advisory Committee would ideally be comprised of two current Calais Selectboard members, a Town Office staff member, and 3-5 Calais citizens who are knowledgeable and engaged in town activities and priorities. Potential member requirements include:
- the ability to interpret state statutes and how they affect related town ordinances,
- a familiarity with the direction of the Town Plan currently under revision,
- research and writing skills, and
- the flexibility and open mind required to work with members of the public to determine ordinances that work best for our entire community.
The Selectboard has identified four Ordinances that need immediate attention. This Committee will review these and bring specific recommendations for change to the Selectboard. They are the: Curtis Pond Island Ordinance, Curtis Pond Recreation Area Ordinance, Dog Ordinance, and Use of Town Highway Right of Way Ordinance.
Per Vermont law, all meetings will be open to the public.
For more information, see the proposed Charge to the Policy Advisory Committee and Resolution to Form the Ordinance Advisory Committee.
