Amendment to Curtis Pond Ordinances 2025
At its June 2, 2025, meeting, the Calais Selectboard adopted amendments to the ordinances regulating the Island and the Recreation Area at Curtis Pond as recommended by the Ordinance Advisory Committee. The following revisions were made to the prior versions:
- Prohibition of fireworks at Recreation Area
- Added regulations regarding watercraft at the Recreation Area
- Increased outdated penalty fees
- Decreased regulations around campsite options on the Island
- Multiple edits for clarity and conciseness
Title 24 V.S.A. § 1973 grants citizens the right to petition for a vote at a Town Meeting to disapprove ordinance amendments adopted by the selectboard. To exercise this right, citizens must present to the Selectboard or Town Clerk, within 44 days following the date of the adoption of the amendment (July 16, 2025), a petition for a vote signed by five percent of the town’s voters. Unless a petition requesting a vote is filed, the amended ordinance will become effective 60 days from the date of said adoption, which is August 1, 2025.
