Calais News & Updates
- Posting Land: The state of Vermont offers a couple of different ways to post your land. You can post a "Safety Zone" that creates a 500-ft no hunting buffer around all of the buildings on your property. (Signs available at no charge from the Town Office.) If you would like to extend the posting to additional acreage, you'll want to register at the Town Office annually. The process involves a brief form and a $5 fee and provides you with the backing of law enforcement in the event of unwanted hunting, trapping, and fishing. See "What Posting Means," from the VT Department of Fish & Wildlife, for more information.
- Tax Bills: Property Tax bills were mailed out on Friday, August 9, 2024. Your first payment is due September 15, 2024, and your second payment is due November 15, 2024. Your bill should include the following document with the answers to many of our more frequently asked questions: "Paying Your Calais Property Tax Bill." You can also find information on our Property Taxes web page. If you have further questions about your property taxes, contact Treasurer Kari Bradley at treasurer@calasivermont.gov.
- Flood Damage to Personal Property: If your property was subject to any damage during the most recent storms, report it immediately to Vermont 211 at https://vermont211.org/resident-form. In order for Vermont to qualify for FEMA reimbursement, Washington County must report a sufficient damage total, and that total has not yet been met. Even if you plan to repair the damages on your own without requesting aid, please report your damages.
- Well Water Testing Kits: Water testing kits are now available at the Town Office. All residents are advised to test their well or spring water after a flooding events. You may also order your free test kit online. If you can't order online, call 802-338-4724 or 800-660-9997 (toll-free in Vermont) or contact your local health office.
- Curtis Pond Dam Reconstruction: Construction on the Curtis Pond Dam will be taking place throughout the summer and early fall. Please be respectful and patient with the workers as they do their work. The construction should not affect swimming, boating, or camping at Curtis Pond. You can find more information at www.curtispond.org, including a livestream video of the work in progress!
